This region is known for its diverse geography, ranging from the savannah in the north to the rainforests in the south, and its unique historical and cultural heritage as well as its livestock and crop growth which contribute greatly to the economy of the country. This region is not as densely populated as compared to the southern region of the country making it essential that we continue outreach programs in the area.
The Northeast Nigeria conflict is a prolonged armed conflict primarily caused by the insurgency of Boko Haram, a militant Islamist group that seeks to establish an Islamic state in the region, and its associated factions. This has led to widespread humanitarian crisis, displacement, and socio-economic disruption in the region. The conflict, which began in 2009, has resulted in over 25,000 civilian deaths and the displacement of 2.1 million people.
The conflict has created a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions facing food insecurity, malnutrition, and lack of access to basic services like healthcare and education.
Large-scale displacement has occurred, with many people seeking refuge in other parts of Nigeria and neighboring countries. There are ongoing efforts to resettle and return displaced populations, but this is often complicated by the ongoing threat of violence
Children have been particularly affected by the conflict, with widespread abductions, recruitment into armed groups, and exposure to violence and trauma.
In 2024, UNICEF stated that the number of attacks by Boko Haram had risen, and half a million children had to flee their homes and families.
This Region of Nigeria boasts a population of approximately 26 million people. Islam is the dominant religion in the northern regions while Christianity is widely practiced in the southern regions
